Event description

Description

One hundred years ago two locomotives on the Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis Railway line smashed into each other on a set of railroad tracks known as Dutchman’s Curve. Each locomotive hauled an overcrowded passenger train. The head-on collision caused the deadliest train wreck in US history.

The tracks of Dutchman’s Curve run through what is now the Richland Creek Greenway.

On July 7, Greenways for Nashville is hosting A Day on the Richland Creek Greenway, when author Betsy Thorpe will lead a series of five interpretative walks through the Richland Creek Greenway in recognition of the 100-year anniversary of the wreck.

A different special guest speaker will accompany Thorpe on each walk. Each speaker will expertly explore some of the other significant historical events that have occurred on—and near—the greenway.

Some of the topics that will be discussed include a vanished Mississippian-culture village; the Massacre at Johnson’s Station; how the Dominican Sisters of Saint Cecelia helped shape the community by bringing Saint Cecelia’s Academy, Saint Thomas Hospital and other Catholic organizations and charities to the area; and how the economics of local moonshiners selling corn whiskey to northern bootleggers during Prohibition impacted West Nashville culture.

One guest speaker, Attorney Robert Brandt, will explain how the Richland Creek Greenway was established. Mr. Brandt will also discuss some of the interpretive markers that are present throughout the greenway. He wrote the text for the markers —including the train wreck marker which can be seen at the Dutchman’s Curve Wayside.

A Day on the Richland Creek Greenway will begin at 9:00 a.m. A complete schedule of the day’s events will be added here soon.

Betsy Thorpe is the author of The Day the Whistles Cried: The Great Cornfield Meet at Dutchman’s Curve
