Meet Your Phenomenal Team of Experts:
Robert Powell, PHD, CDCES, CSCS, ACSM-CEP
- Associate Professor of Exercise Physiology and Director of the Diabetes Exercise Center at Marshall University in Huntington, WV.
- Faculty Coordinator/Coach of the Marshall University Cycling Club to promote both recreational riding and collegiate racing.
- Received both his MS and his PhD in Exercise Physiology from the University of Pittsburgh and holds the credentials of Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES), ACSM- Clinical Exercise Physiologist (ACSM-CEP), NSCA- Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and a Licensed USA Cycling Coach.
Dessi Zaharieva, PHD, CEP, CDCES – thriving with T1D for over 25 years
- Instructor and Exercise Physiologist currently working in Pediatric Endocrinology at Stanford University.
- Research focuses on various strategies to improve blood glucose management during exercise, sports, and competition in type 1 diabetes.
- Also working on implementing exercise education and monitoring physical activity patterns and behaviors in newly diagnosed youth with type 1 diabetes.
- Second-degree black belt in taekwondo who represented Team Canada for many years and earned a bronze medal at the World Championships in 2013.
Jacob DeBlois – thriving with T1D for over 18 years
- Studied Exercise Science at Skidmore University and then got his masters in Kinesiology at University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
- Currently a doctoral candidate in Exercise Physiology at Syracuse Univeristy with a research focus on heart disease risk in firefighters, police, and military service members.
- Trekked to Mt. Everest Basecamp in 2018
- Avid endurance athlete including marathons, tris, obstacle course runs
