DSM-5 Overview and Update for Mental Health Professionals

The American Psychiatric Association (APA) launched the new DSM-5 on May 18, 2013 at its annual meeting in San Francisco, California after many years of field trials, research, and public and professional commentary. There have been many significant changes in this new edition of the DSM and knowing what they are is an important aspect of staying current in the field. The focus of this training is to introduce these changes to mental health professionals who already have an understanding of the basics of psychiatric assessment and diagnosis.

The training is designed to be brief and highly informational and will cover the following content areas:

  1. General Changes in New Edition
  2. Lost Diagnostic Categories
  3. New Diagnostic Categories
  4. New Specific Diagnoses
  5. Important Name Changes
  6. Reclassifications of Diagnoses
  7. Changes in Coding
  8. Implementation Recommendations
  9. New Multicultural Assessments
  10. New Diagnostic Assessments

Please note that the class is designed for graduate and post-graduate level mental health professionals who have already been exposed to previous editions of the DSM and want to learn more about the changes and how those changes will impact them. This is not a class on what the DSM is or how to use it in clinical practice.
