Drypoint Etching workshop

Drypoint Etching workshop

By Bea Robinson

Overview

Explore the process of drypoint, experiment with mark-making and create unique hand-pulled prints in this relaxed workshop.

Drypoint is a wonderfully tactile intaglio printmaking process where you scratch an image directly onto a plastic or cardboard plate. The lines you carve—called “burrs”—hold the ink, and with the help of a printing press, your design is transferred onto paper.

Printmaking tutor Bea will guide you through each step of the workshop, from preparing your plate and designing your image to inking, printing, and experimenting with layers of colour. You’ll have the chance to explore expressive mark-making, simple collage elements, and layering techniques to create rich, textured prints.

In this session, you’ll:

  • Create your own small edition of prints, perfect for framing, turning into cards, or giving as handmade gifts.
  • We will be working up to A5 size, so do bring along any drawings, photographs etc to use as inspiration for your designs, there will also be imagery available.
  • Receive clear guidance in a relaxed, small-group environment, allowing plenty of individual support.

All materials and equipment will be provided. It can get pretty inky so aprons will also be available. If you can, please bring a small folder or potfolio of some sort to take your prints home in at the end.

Whether you’re new to printmaking or looking to try a new technique, you’ll leave with your finished prints, your plate, and the skills to continue experimenting with drypoint. This workshop is for adults and no experience is necessary, just bring your creativity!
