ABOUT THE WORKSHOP INSTRUCTOR

Master Craftsman, Geoff Duggan, is the only internationally accredited examiner and advanced instructor of dry stone walling in Australia. His work has been regularly televised on popular home and garden shows and his passion for keeping this ancient craft alive and well is through holding his weekend workshops that are hosted on properties.

Former landscape architect of the Australian Botanic Gardens, Mount Annan, he now runs Geogenic Landscapes, his own landscape design, construction and horticultural consultancy business.

To gain his international qualifications Geoff had to travel to England to complete the four levels of the respected Craftsman Certificate Scheme of the Dry Stone Walling Association of Great Britain (DSWA). As an accredited examiner he must return to England with other eminent ‘wallers’ from across the world to have their skills periodically reassessed to maintain their examiner status.

Geoff says the constant DSWA training and examinations are intended to ensure the ongoing integrity of the craft is maintained throughout the world.

Dry stone walls are built without mortar, and rely solely on the forces of gravity and friction for their strength. These structures were once used as a means of survival — for shelter and to contain livestock. Today they are used in gardens as retaining and feature walls, and as sculptural artworks in public open spaces.

As a Master Craftsman, Geoff likes to push the boundaries of his craft to new limits and has created stunning sculptural artworks and landscapes including the impressive ornate dry stone entry wall at The Australian Botanic Garden and large sculptural pieces that include ‘The Knot’ and the ‘Door to the Sun’.
