Description
This is the 10th Annual Drumsista Concert! Please join us for this year’s community musical extravaganza! Led by DRUMZ owner and longtime Austin hand drumming teacher and Founder/ Director of Austin’s well known All Women’s Drumming Ensemble, THE DJEMBABES, this year’s Drumsista Concert will fill the sanctuary at Unity Church of the Hills (a favorite Austin musical venue) with hand-clapping, heart-pounding, foot-stomping drumming, singing, and dancing, as they passionately and joyfully perform the rhythms and music of West Africa. Doors open at 7pm. The Drumsistas are a powerful group of 30+ women of all ages who are drumming students at Sherry’s Studio at DRUMZ, who love the joy and exuberant spirit of drumming together in a cooperative, supportive, and dedicated community of women and who love the magic that happens through the sharing of their music with an audience. The audience absorbs and feels the richness and depth of the multiple layered rhythms being played by the seated drummers on Djembes and the powerful bass line rhythms pounded out by sticks on the big Djundun Bass Drums, and become entranced by the mesmerizing harmonies of the vocalists singing these treasured African songs! It‘s indeed a powerful experience for all present! The audience is encouraged to sing and dance along on many of the pieces!
Every year the concert is held in celebration and benefit of an organization with a cause with which we are in alignment and who needs our help. We select an organization working toward our mutual dreams and ideals for a better, safer, more sustainable, equitable, socially just and spiritually fulfilling world for all beings. This year’s concert proceeds will go to Posada Esperanza, a local Austin organization helping, supporting, guiding, and educating immigrant women and their children who would otherwise be without these resources. These are families escaping domestic and cultural violence in lands often very far away and its purpose is to fulfill the basic needs of these families within Austin, often homeless and without any other means of support after their valiant, courageous, and heart wrenching journey to America in their quest to create a better future for themselves and their beloved children. It is an honor and a privilege to support and work with such a worthy, dedicated, and urgently needed organization in these challenging times.
