Date: October 13, 2019
Time: 8:00am – 5:00pm
Location: The Hanahau’oli School Professional Development Center & School Gym (1922 Makiki Street, Honolulu, HI 96822)

DRUMTASTIC® Ability Beats™ is presented by Drums Alive and is for educators of all grade levels and disciplines, as well as therapists, recreation leaders, and fitness instructors who work with children and adults with diverse abilities. The foundation, theory, and research behind the DRUMTASTIC® Ability Beats™ program will be presented together with the basic movements and teaching concepts needed to successfully implement the Drums Alive® program in your learning environment. Participants will learn how to use movements that inspire both children and adults with diverse abilities, demonstrating how this research-based fitness, wellness, brain, and body program can foster individual creativity in a fun environment that turns the impossible to I’M POSSIBLE. We will coordinate kinesthetic awareness, neuro-muscular skills, cardiovascular conditioning, flexibility, strength, health, and wellness activities into an inspiring experience that accommodates physiological, emotional and cognitive needs, and taps individual ABILITIES leading to endless possibilities. Participants will experience first-hand how music, balls, and drumsticks create curiosity, promote attention, and support students in achieving a high level of motivation.

Registration in the workshop includes a DRUMTASTIC® Ability Beats™ Sampler Manual, a pair of drumsticks, a certificate of completion, and lunch. Please bring water, a towel, and an optional change of clothes as this is a fun and active workshop!

Workshop Objectives:
Participants will be able to:

  • Create an all-inclusive, no participant left behind approach for a healthy and happy lifestyle.
  • Implement a balanced physical, psychological, mental, and emotional program that can be applied to all participants and to ensure everyone benefits from this curriculum.
  • Make active movement within the “family” possible and develop a participant’s acquired skills and abilities to present at a social or school event.
  • Experience diversity as an inspiration and enrichment to strengthen social interaction where participants learn from each other to be considerate, to practice tolerance, and how to deal with their own, and others’ strengths and weaknesses.

About the Presenter:
Carrie Ekins is the CEO and founder of Drums Alive®, as well as the co-founder of DRUMTASTIC, Academic Beats. She is dedicated to creating programs that inspire positive healthy lifestyle changes and making a difference in individual lives. Carrie advocates for educationally inclusive fitness initiatives to successfully reach those who have been traditionally underrepresented in the fitness arena, including young and old participants with special needs and physical impairments, and those from diverse backgrounds. Carrie’s own experience of immobility inspired her philosophy that fitness programs must improve the mind, body, and spirit without bias. Since 2000, Carrie has contributed to brain research connected to exercise physiology both as a doctoral student at the University of Chemnitz in Germany and as a lecturer. On a personal level, Carrie makes participants feel important and believes creating an atmosphere that encourages positive self-esteem, cognitive growth, socialization, team spirit, creative expression, and acceptance will impact lives mentally, physically, and spiritually. Through culturally rich music selections, rituals, and knowledge, Carrie inspires participants to respect and appreciate others while improving instructor-participant interaction.
