About this Event

Despite a long standing presence in Europe, Drug User Unions have emerged in the United States in the past several years as a result of strong leadership and community organizing expertise of people who use drugs from the U.S. South and Northeast. Drug User Unions represent an opportunity for people with lived experience to mobilize for political change; provide expertise to elected officials, public health professionals, health care providers, drug control policy leaders, etc; and offer mutual aid in order to support safer drug use and address the trauma of regularly losing friends and family to overdose. People who use drugs (and those who love them) in Iowa are eager to organize in order to build power to drive political change and create the social conditions necessary for daily survival and healing. This workshop will train Iowans who use drugs in the basics of drug user union formation, structure, organizing, and campaign building.
