Event description

Description

Background: In light of recent devastating wildfires in California, many public agencies, municipalities and land owners are actively pursuing new tools for monitoring the ecology of forests, as well as managing vegetation and fuels. This is particularly true in the urban-wildland interface where the greatest threats occur. UAVs, or drones, are an emerging technology for high-resolution aerial mapping and provide a powerful new tool for monitoring local vegetation and fire risk throughout the growing season.

This workshop is hosted by Greg Crutsinger (PhD) from Scholar Farms, a PhD ecologist and professional trainer for vegetation mapping in the drone industry. The workshop will provide two days of rapid hands-on training for mapping with UAVs, sensors, and software. The target audience is forest scientists, members of Cal Fire, Forest Service, BLM, local fire agencies, water districts, counties or municipalities, relevant NGOs (e.g. conservancies, camps, open space), and land owners seeking to learn drone technology for monitoring defensible space in California.

Topics Covered: This workshop will focus on mapping forests for standing live and dead trees, monitoring of defensible space of properties, and more:

  • Drone hardware and sensors

  • Mission planning with mobile apps

  • Best practices for data capture and mapping

  • Data processing on cloud (DroneDeploy) and desktop (PIx4D)

  • Multispectral cameras for vegetation mapping

  • Additional complimentary data tools for visualization using drones

Room and Board Provided: Housing will be provided as part of the tuition. Housing will be in shared cabins at the Sagehen Creek Field Station, part of the University of California Natural Reserve System. Sagehen is located outside Truckee, California in the Sierra Nevada on 9,000 acres with facilities located at 6,390 ft elevation. The reserve includes extensive stands of mixed conifer, as well as brush fields, scattered mountain meadows, and fens. https://sagehen.ucnrs.org. Camping is also available.

Note: Hotels are available at your own additional cost in nearby Truckee if you prefer less rustic accomodations.

Meals, snacks and strong coffee will be included in this workshop tuition. Please specify if you have any dietary restrictions and we will do our best to meet your needs.

No drone experience required prior to the workshop.
