Switick is a graduate of Villanova University, the University of Tennessee Space Institute, the U.S. Air Force’s Air Command and Staff College and the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School.

He served as an officer in the U.S. Navy for twenty years where he was a member of the Department of Defense’s Acquisition Professional Community, the U.S. Navy’s Space Cadre, and the U.S. Navy’s Aerospace Engineering Duty Officer Corp from 1986 to 2006. An Operation Desert Storm veteran, Switick served his country flying attack helicopters from U.S. Navy frigates, destroyers and cruisers.

From 1999 to 2002, Commander Switick was assigned to the Navy Warfare Development Command (NWDC), which was co-located with the U.S. Navy’s War College in Newport, Rhode Island. He served in the Concepts Development Department as the UAS Concept Development Lead working on a tiered unmanned air vehicle (UAV) warfighting concept that was previously studied and reported on by the U.S. Navy’s Strategic Studies Group (SSG). This concept was analyzed during the 2001 Global Wargame and the 2002 Fleet Battle Experiment, and lead to the development of the current Navy and Marine Corps unmanned systems of today.

Between his Navy tours, and his work as a business owner, Switick has been supporting the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) in Patuxent River, Maryland for more than 30 years. His professional experience at NAVAIR included the role of chief operational test director during the infancy of the U.S. Navy’s unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) flight testing.

His company, AVIAN, Inc. is the prime services contractor for the U.S. Navy’s Unmanned Test and Evaluation Squadron (UX) TWENTY-FOUR. AVIAN provides UAS test pilots, air vehicle operations, mission systems operators, flight test engineers and technicians in support of developmental test and evaluation of over 23 fixed and rotary wing UAS including the MQ-8 Fire Scout, RQ-20 Puma, RQ-21 Blackjack, RQ-26 Aerostar and several commercial systems.

AVIAN was a key partner on the Northern Plains UAS Test Site’s FAA proposal team, and the subsequent stand-up of test operations.

Presenter Tyler Sautter UAS Business Develoment Lead of AVIAN

Tyler Sautter has years of experience in the operations of UAVs from Group 1 – Group 3. Sautter fielded the first military UAS system in the state of Colorado in 2008 and immediately deployed with that system to Baghdad, Iraq. Upon returning, he attended and graduated from the U.S. Army’s Instructor Pilot school and went to work as a lead Standardization Pilot, which required him to deploy to Iraq as a civilian contractor, running standardization programs for GOCO (Government owned, Civilian operated) sites in direct support of Joint Special Operations Command.

Sautter also worked as a Senior Training Instructor at the U.S. Army’s UAS National Training Center in Ft. Huachuca, AZ, and has since written training programs for commercial UAS manufacturers and managed a team of UAS instructor pilots while delivering training across six continents. Sautter is currently a UAS Operations expert at Avian, LLC, where he is building a commercial UAS services division.
