.........

Dried Spider is a winding, grooving, brooding amalgamation of psychedelic soul, art rock, bent jazz, and lyricism made for the people. Dried Spider sings of nature, nurture, and strange connections amongst unexpected grooves, addictive guitar lines, and 3 part vocal harmonies. The songs of bandleader Matty Witney are a product of the environments they are born in, from the spacious landscapes of his homeland Australia, to most recently, the socially complex bustle of current Chicago and the U.S.

The trajectory of Dried Spider has taken a detour in the last 3 years when project leader, Matty Witney relocated to the US to marry his long time partner. Over the course of settling in to his new hometown of Chicago, Matty immersed himself in the cities rich jazz and improve scene, taking a break from the bandleader path to freshen his musical palette. Upon connecting with the right people, Dried Spider found its U.S. formation with a lineup shared with Matty’s partners band ‘Good At Bad’. With the family unit complete the band have set about recording the projects 1st release since the ‘Wounded City EP’ with an album due for launch in April 2019 and US tour to follow.

Dried Spider play psychedelic soul music. The project is the creative offering of Australian multi-instrumentalist Matty Witney, who assembled a Chicago incarnation of the band in 2017. Their live set is often described as transportive; weaving elements of jazz, soul, indie and arty folk into a sound that is at once innovative yet relatable. The projects 2nd EP is due out in the summer of 2018.

‘Dried Spider’ are a psychedelic-soul band from Brisbane, Australia. With a love of musical innovation, they weave elements of psychedelic-soul, arty-folk, jazz and improvisation, to create a unique musical offering.

The wide dry countryside, and crackly bush of central-eastern Australia are present in the space created within the music, while at the same time the music holds space for the complexity of the contemporary Australian experience.

The bands first EP ‘Wounded City’ is a five track sonic journey that produces an experience that is intimate, transportive, and dreamlike. It is described by Sam Pankhurst of the Australian Art Orchestra as ‘an opulent sensory trip that keeps on giving’. The band is currently preparing to record their second EP, which is due out in Nov 2016.

The project was initiated in the small but potent musical community of West End Brisbane. Once a haven for people of bohemian inclinations seeking refuge from the largely agricultural/mining state of Queensland, the suburb is quickly loosing it’s character to a wave of gentrification heralded by the recent ‘G20 Summit’. The suburb holds the recent memory of being an agricultural town. Derelict weather-board houses set on large overgrown blocks sit within view of city skyscrapers. The languid pace of the steamy subtropical city, and a ganga loving populace produced a sound of downtempo groove based music which borrows from reggae, jazz, soul, and hip-hop. A strong element of collaboration has been present in the scene, and this is no exception for Dried Spider, with the next EP featuring a number of production collaborations that pay homage to the West End sound.

...........

‘Wounded City’ is a psychedelic soul adventure.

A 20 minute EP that spans a wide spectrum of colour across its 5 tracks.

It fuses narrative lyrics, clanging guitars, analogue synths, evolving chord progressions, and dragon sperm.

It is the debut release for Dried Spider.

The track 'Broken Mind' was included on Wondercore Island's 'Mixtape #5'

Matty Witney is the chief creator behind the project, though a number of collaborators have been involved in the visioning of the project.

Matty grew up in regional QLD. His family of folk musicians lived on a bush block outside of Gympie. After completing a degree in music/guitar performance he lived as a musician in Melbourne, where he was involved in the bands, ‘Clairy Browne and The Banging Rackettes’, ‘The Harry James Angus Band’, and ‘The Jelly Tub Rollers’.

NIIKA:

NIIKA (FKA Good at Bad), conceived and fronted by Russian-born Chicago native Nika Nemirovsky (guitar and voice), is a genre-bending, continent-crossing, soft explosion of intimate indie, soul, and dirty pop. Nika wrote and recorded much of her music in Australia, but is currently holding a close focus on the blossoming creativity of her Chicago ensemble. The live show is a lush bath of ardent vocal performance, cradling harmonies, and seamless groove changes, which align like aural punctuation around Nika's vivid storytelling and deep, organic vulnerability.

❖❖❖

"Nemirovsky makes big music from a small space. From her hands, even only guitar and voice can perform the most mosaic duet, waltzing back and forth with one another in a dance that conveys not only playful novelty, but also an honest and undeniable heartache."

-Elijah Fosl, Staff Contributor at "The Le Sigh"
