Dream Big for Youth Sessions: Community Youth Mapping & How to Help
Come and learn about our plans to engage young people in an exciting project called Community Youth Mapping. The project can help us make a youth/community center in Lexington Park a reality sooner than the projected date of 2026 as well as create opportunities for the youth of 2016-2017 to gain work and leadership skills.
Sound intriguing? Come and check it out!

About Community Youth Mapping:
Our presentation will introduce you to a process called Community Youth Mapping (CYM). Through the CYM process, youth and adults identify and expand on existing resources as well as help create new opportunities in our community. Meaningful participation by young people involves planning, data collection/analysis and dissemination of information. In partnership with young people, adults provide technical assistance, political will, and personal support for the process.
The success of Community Youth Mapping depends on broad-based community support. We seek input, energy, commitments and contributions from the greater Lexington Park community, including but not limited to St. Mary's County government, businesses, educators, churches, and nonprofits. The greater the participation, the better the results for our young people. You (yes, you!) have a contribution to make!
Advocating for a Youth/Community Center: the road so far and where we are going
We, a group of local citizens, have been working to take purposeful steps to establish a community youth center in Lexington Park. You may have signed our petition, spoken to us at a community event, seen us at County and community meetings, or read one of our editorials in the newspaper. Established as a Steering Committee in 2015 for a Youth/Community Center Campaign, our Campaign reached a milestone this spring when the county included a plan and design phase for a Youth/Community Center in the county’s 2022 Capital Improvement Plan.
As this timeline is unlikely to result in completion of a Center before the year 2026, we have sought ways to move the project along more quickly and to engage young people in the process. Community Youth Mapping is one such avenue. We have been working with CYM experts, a group called "Block-by-Block Consulting," who will be in Lexington Park on Monday, December 5th to help us introduce this process to you and gain your input.
