Description

Using using simple drawing tools, learn the fundamental skeletal proportions of classical Imperial Roman caps, optical spacing, influences of broad edged tools on the weighting of strokes, curves, swells and serifs; connections of hand made forms with early serifed Roman type, relationships between capitals to lowercase, and between serifed Roman and sans serif type forms.

Materials

  • Basic calligraphy supplies you already have including dip pens, black ink (e.g. Higgins Eternal), markers. If you are bringing ink and paper, make sure there is no bleeding.

  • White Layout Paper, quality Tracing Paper

  • Soft, medium and hard Pencils / Mechanical Pencils

  • Small Pigma Micron Ink Pens, black

  • Pilot Parallel Pens, including 6 mm and smaller, black.

  • Eraser / Kneaded Rubber Eraser

  • Bottled White eg Dr Martin’s Bleed Proof White

  • Small pointed brush

  • Ruler

Julian Waters is a well known brilliant calligrapher and award-winning designer whose clients include many publishers, agencies, and design firms. He has taught and lectured worldwide for several decades. He has designed typefaces for Adobe, corporations, memorials and public spaces, including Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello. His publications include the 2016 monograph about his longtime friend and mentor, Hermann Zapf: A Life in Letters.
