This class meets on Saturday/Sunday: December 3 & 4, 2016
10:00 am to 4:00 pm
Time tested techniques for drawing letter forms, and the variables to consider in approaching hand lettering will be covered in this two day workshop. Our aim is to develop skills that instill a unique fluidity into the letterforms, that computer fonts can never replicate. We will begin with a brief historical intro to the practical import of these techniques, and the outstanding work that has emerged over the centuries into the current era, followed by pencil warm up exercises. For the first day, the workshop will focus on drawing old style letterforms, while incorporating significant variations in serifs, stem, stress and so on from classic exemplars. The second day will branch out into the modern style of proportioning. After an overview of the underlying structural dynamic for even width serif and sans serif, we will draw these styles, in the afternoon incorporating different kinds of shading to our drawings.
