Event description

Description

Travelling can be difficult for many of us, but travelling with dementia can bring additional challenges. Our journeys often require us to use a range of transport products and services that can appear complex in themselves. However, additional time pressures, delays and crowded and noisy environments can present further barriers to travel, evoking a range of emotions including excitement, frustration and anxiety.

If we are to understand and address the barriers that can stop people with dementia from travelling, we need to find new ways to tell stories that capture the emotional and sensory impact of products and services, as well as mobility challenges.

So, if we bring comic artists together with people with dementia, can we begin to create accessible, descriptive materials that truly describe and illustrate the experience of travelling with dementia?

Our project, in association with the Comics & Graphic Novels course at the University of Dundee and V&A Dundee, will explore the potential of Comics and Graphic Novels to provide a unique approach to storytelling, combining few words with powerful images to express the emotions that travel services can evoke and the resulting impact on the lives of people with dementia.

Join us for a creative afternoon and share your thoughts on our plans for people with dementia and comic artists to take journeys together and create illustrated stories which aim to truly describe the experiences of, and potential barriers to, travelling. Help us to consider questions such as:

  • Can this approach help people with dementia to more accurately describe their experiences?

  • Can we gain insights that lead to the development of more inclusive services?

  • Can comics and graphic novels provide information and training materials that are more accessible?

  • Can the outcomes inform local development plans and transport networks?

You’ll hear about the challenges of travelling with dementia, learn how comic artists have already responded to important topics in health and wellbeing and explore Dundee’s rich local network of design expertise.

We will, of course, be drawing at some point.

Finish the week with some interesting company in an iconic venue. Bring a curious mind and help us to spark ideas for telling stories that can help to influence the design of services that are truly inclusive.

Drawing from Experience is led by Go Upstream and funded by the Dementia Services Development Trust
