Event description

Description

The Centre for Higher Education Research, Policy and Practice (CHERPP) invites you to a workshop on exemplary teaching and learning with Dr Thomas Carey,

Executive-in-Residence for Teaching & Learning Innovation at the BC Association of Institutes and Universities. The focus of the workshop will be distinctive excellence for our students as a primary driver of teaching and learning. This workshop is being tailored for staff working at institutes within the Technological University for Dublin Alliance.

Summary of workshop: The increasingly competitive, fluid and challenging workplaces of the future will require graduates who are prepared to work with knowledge that doesn’t yet exist, using practices that don’t yet exist, in jobs that don’t yet exist. We can prepare graduates for these changing environments by building their capability in adapting and shaping these emerging learning and knowledge practices – using our own teaching and learning environments as exemplary ‘workplaces for learning’.

We’ll use as an illustration a recent initiative in Canadian higher education to develop graduate Capability for Engaging with Innovation in the Workplace. This will demonstrate the potential for our actions as educators to speak for us about the workplaces of the future: as we engage with innovations in teaching and learning, we can provide a model for students’ engagement with emerging learning and knowledge practices in their own careers (and in their other roles as community members and global citizens).

How we teach is a key part of what we teach…and may have a more lasting impact on our students in the future than the specific subject matter content of our classes!

Tom will also be delivering a the keynote address at the ICEP conference this year on December 14th and 15th http://icep.ie/
