Dr. Steve Jackson Tree Ring Talk Oct 22
Tree-Ring Talk seminar on Wednesday, Oct 22 at Noon, MST with Dr. Steve Jackson
Please join us on Wednesday, October 22 at NOON, MST for this week's Tree-Ring talk seminar, by Dr. Stephen Stephen T. Jackson on "Mainstreaming the Past: Margaret Bryan Davis, Ecology, and Climate", in person at Bannister 110 and via zoom.
Abstract: Margaret Bryan Davis (1931 – 2024) was an influential figure in ecology, paleoecology, biogeography, and climate science in her long career from the 1950s through the 2000s. She played a critical role in placing Quaternary history in the mainstream of ecological thinking and helped prepare the path for global change ecology. She also blazed trails for women in the scientific and academic communities, while helping shift the tenor of discourse and conduct in multiple fields toward more productive ends. This talk will discuss her contributions in the broader context of the history of ecology, paleoecology, and climate science as they’ve developed over the past two centuries.
Stephen T. Jackson is Scientist Emeritus at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). His last assignment at USGS was serving as Senior Science Advisor on Biodiversity to the USGS National Climate Adaptation Science Center, including organizing the trinational North American Assessment of Biodiversity and Climate Change. Until early 2022, he was Director of the Department of the Interior Southwest and South Central Climate Adaptation Science Centers, partnerships between USGS and multi-university consortia respectively led by the University of Arizona and the University of Oklahoma. In all these positions, he worked to foster effective engagement between researchers and natural-resource decision-makers. He is also Adjunct Professor of Geosciences and of Natural Resources & Environment at the University of Arizona. Before joining USGS in 2012, he was at the University of Wyoming, where he was founding Director of the Program in Ecology and is now Professor Emeritus of Botany.
