About this event

The Black Mental Health Alliance (BMHA) is pleased to invite you to the 3rd Annual Dr. Maxie T. Collier Awards . The Dr. Maxie T. Collier Awards virtual celebration, to be held on Thursday, October 28, 2021, is a fundraiser and celebration of the life, work and vision of BMHA’s principal founder, Dr. Maxie T. Collier and individuals that exemplify this vision. This year's theme: “Honoring and Celebrating Our Legacy, Our Healing, Our Moment” speaks to the ever present resilience and need to support the emerging mental health issues in the black community. This year's honorees are steadfast in their commitment to mental health, wellness and healing:

  • Dr. Na’im Akbar, clinical psychologist, scholar and author
  • Dr. Alfiee Breland-Noble. Psychology, scientist, author and speaker
  • Roberta’s House- Annette March-Grier, President and Co-Founder, RN, CNN Hero
  • Youth Resiliency Institute- Co-Founders, Mr. Faison Hill, Ms. Navasha Daya

BMHA for more than 35 years has been a mental health and social advocacy nonprofit organization providing a trusted forum to lead and promote culturally grounded approaches to behavioral health access, quality and integration for the black community. Our work is more critical than ever and we are excited to celebrate the brilliance and resilience of those who labor in this work.

This is an exciting occasion for BMHA supporters and friends to celebrate and partner with us. Your assistance allows us to provide extraordinary support to black people and vulnerable communities through innovative mental health programming, training and an expansive database of culturally grounded and patient centered licensed mental health professionals.

Consider purchasing a ticket to attend the Virtual VIP Reception, become a sponsor, create or donate a virtual gala VIP reception table. VIP Reception Tickets are $225 per person and includes dinner (Class Act Catering), a bottle of wine delivered to your home or place of business in and around Maryland and D.C., and access to a fireside Q&A Session with the keynote speaker.

The Black Mental Health Alliance for Education and Consultation, Inc. (BMHA) was founded on December 9, 1983 and received its Articles of Incorporation on January 1, 1984. BMHA is a private non-profit 501(C)3 organization which provides training, consultation, support groups, resource referral, public information, and educational resources regarding mental health and mental illness issues.  The Guiding Principles of BMHA’s mental health programs, trainings, and consultations are “Concern for Others, Integrity, Respect for Diversity, and Empowerment.” BMHA has developed into a regionally well known and respected health and human services force whose track record is sound and the staff of which is frequently called upon with requests for its expertise.

The primary mission of the BMHA is to provide a forum and promote a holistic, culturally relevant approach to the development and maintenance of optimal mental health programs and services for African Americans and other people of color. Further, BMHA promotes appropriate mental health care, service delivery, provider networks, and theoretical understanding through culturally relevant approaches and models in education and consultation.
