Event description

Description

Great Lakes, IL – The National Museum of the American Sailor invites military and civilian guests to attend a free Lecture on July 29th, 2017 from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 pm in the Museum’s Main Gallery.

By the early months of 1945 the United States Navy’s Pacific submarine fleet had become a sharply honed weapon of war. The American “Silent Service” was inflicting losses on the Imperial Japanese navy and merchant fleet out of proportion to both the size and cost of America’s investment. But in the first years of the war, American submarines did not perform up to even pre-war expectations. This presentation will examine the causes of the early poor performances and the remedies that led to an eventual triumph by the Silent Service. Dr. Ed Finch, noted military historian, will deliver this presentation and will also be taking questions afterwards. This event is free and open to the public.
