Description

Making Sense of Sensitive Kids

Some children seem to be more intense and sensitive in their responses to sensory stimuli – such as sound, touch, taste or emotional/perceptual activity. Fifteen to twenty percent of children are estimated to fall on the sensitivity spectrum. They are often described as more intense and easily affected by sensory stimuli. We can all feel overwhelmed at times, but for some sensitive kids their enhanced receptivity to the world can quickly lead to feelings of overwhelm and stress. In order to help sensitive kids live in their world, we need to start by making sense of them and appreciating things through their eyes. Sensitive kids need receptive adults who can convey to a child that they are not difficult or too big to handle. There is a lot that parents and teachers can do to help sensitive kids find rest so they can play and grow.
