Event description
Dr Angus Ritchie on Inclusive Populism in the Global Age

About this Event

In these times of divisiveness, across political, racial, religious, and other lines, and in this time of the rise of (the worst forms of ) populism in politics particularly, it is refreshing and heartening to find a new theology of 'inclusive populism' entering upon the world stage. Dr Angus Ritchie, a priest of the Church of England, and Director of the Centre for Theology & Community in London (theology-centre.org.uk), is visiting the USA for a short time only this month. This is his only speaking engagement in New York.

Dr Ritchie speaks on his newest publication Inclusive Populism: Creating Citizens in the Global Age (Notre Dame Press: September 2019) in the context of Sunday's Choral Eucharist. In this first volume in the Contending Modernities series, Inclusive Populism: Creating Citizens in the Global Age, he claims that our current political upheavals, exemplified by the far-right populism of billionaire Donald Trump, reveal fundamental flaws in secular liberalism. Ritchie maintains that both liberalism and this 'fake populism' resign citizens to an essentially passive role in public life.

The Eucharist is followed by lunch in Revelation Gallery, at which copies of the book (at the discounted price of $10) are available and the author available for signing. Free, but registration is very helpful for catering purposes.
