Description

Presented by the SoHo Arts Network at The Drawing Center, during the Downtown Culture Talk, artist Judith Bernstein and curator Alison M. Gingeras will discuss Bernstein's career and her exhibition in our Main Gallery.

For over fifty years, New York-based artist Judith Bernstein (b. 1942, Newark, New Jersey) has created expressive drawings and paintings that boldly address the underlying psychological connection between warfare and sexual aggression. Her provocative pieces have direct impact yet also carry nuanced meanings and allusions. As a student at Yale in the 60s, Bernstein developed a fascination with the graffiti she found in men’s restrooms, images that would later inform the basis of her work.

Alison M. Gingeras is a curator and writer based in New York and Warsaw. Her curatorial history spans the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, Palazzo Grassi, Venice, to East Village storefront curatorial space, Oko. Notable museum exhibitions include: “Dear Painter, Paint Me: Painting the Figure Since Late Picabia,” (2003), “Daniel Buren Le Musee qui n’existait pas” (2002) (both for Centre Pompidou), and, “Pop Life,” (2010; Tate Modern). Most recently her exhibition “ Oscar Wilde Temple” by McDermott & McGough opened as a public artwork at the Church of the Village on West 13th Street.

This panel discussion is part of SoHo Art Network's (SAN) Downtown Culture Talk, a three-part series of discussions that will consider the presence of female artists in Manhattan's Downtown. The Downtown Culture Talk follows SoHo Art Network's spring Downtown Culture Walk, as SAN walks and talks through Downtown's history.
