Event description

Description

A total solar eclipse in central Nebraska has not occurred since 1194 and the next one won’t occur here until 2794. One hasn’t been experienced in any part of the continental U.S. since 1979. It is one of nature’s most dramatic shows. Throughout history such events have caused us to consider our place in the universe. It is a reminder that our very existence is dependent on a delicate and powerful set of natural relationships and processes.

On a much more localized scale we are dependent on a delicate and powerful set of natural relationships and processes that enable Earth to provide hospitality to our species. We cannot do anything to affect an eclipse – except to celebrate it. We can do things to affect the hospitality of our planet – especially with regard to global warming.

We are planning a party to celebrate the eclipse at Marquette, NE on an organic farm and a prairie preserve. The celebration will include quality food, good company, natural beauty, and an opportunity to visit and support regenerative land use practices. "Regenerative" is a term being used in part to describe practices that help regenerate earth’s atmosphere by sequestering carbon in the soil.

VIEWING THE ECLIPSE

Monday, August 21 at 10:30 a.m.

Gjerloff Prairie (weather permitting) or Marquette Town Hall

Brunch Buffet will be set by Creative Cuisine, again featuring locally sourced and organic foods. If the weather report looks like it will be rainy or cloudy in Marquette, but clear nearby we may move up the time for the brunch and serve it at the Marquette Town Hall to allow folks to drive to a better viewing location.

Eclipse Viewing - out on the Prairie

The partial eclipse will start about 11:34 a.m. The total eclipse will last for over 2 minutes and occur just before 1 p.m. Interpretive materials and viewing glasses will be provided. Weather records indicate that there is at least a 70-75% chance of clear skies on August 21 in central Nebraska. We will also suggest some other scenic places in the area for those who might prefer them. If the weather report on August 21 doesn’t look favorable in Marquette folks might want to travel to another location. You might check out this guide to eclipse viewing.
