Event description
Online conference celebrating the 30th anniversary of the publication of Generation X & Coupland’s engagement with the contemporary moment.

About this Event

Douglas Coupland’s oeuvre is inherently concerned with what it means to be living in our ‘extreme present’. Marking the 30th anniversary of the publication of Coupland’s first novel, Generation X, this virtual international conference – the first on Coupland’s work – seeks to explore the richness of Coupland’s engagement with contemporary life across writings and visual culture.

We are delighted to announce that the conference will feature:

  • An interview with Douglas Coupland. Conference attendees will have the opportunity to send questions beforehand.
  • Keynote addresses by writer and curator Shumon Basar; writer, editor, art historian, and curator Victoria Camblin; and Professor of English Literature Bran Nicol (University of Surrey). Find out more about our keynote speakers here.
  • A writers’ panel discussion on Coupland’s work hosted by Image Journal featuring Nick Ripatrazone, writer and Culture Editor for the journal, Meghan O’Gieblyn, and Diletta De Cristofaro. The panel will be facilitated by Lisa Ann Cockrel, the Director of Programs for Image. Find out more about the panel here.
  • Panel discussions by academics and artists, including Makoto Fujimura, who will join us to talk about the original piece he has created in honor of the 30-year anniversary of Coupland’s Generation X. Find out more about Makoto and this piece here.

If you'd like to propose a paper for the panel discussions, you can find the CFP here (we have extended the deadline to 20 February 2021). The organisers welcome proposals from any disciplines and theoretical perspectives, and from scholars at all career stages, on any topic related to Coupland’s oeuvre (fiction, non-fiction, visual arts).

Find out more about the conference on our website.

Please note the start and end time for the conference are provisional. The conference schedule will be released soon and we will do our best to accommodate different time zones.
