#DoughSomething Happy Hour

Join us on May 24 for a frank discussion about race, identity, and the restaurant industry, moderated by Monica Eng from WBEZ and featuring renowned chefs Nyesha Arrington, Erik Bruner-Yang, Brandon Jew, Beverly Kim, and Preeti Mistry.

In response to the recent uptick in anti-Asian harassment, discrimination, and violence across the country, a chefs, bars, and restaurants across the country have teamed up to raise awareness about anti-Asian hate and encourage people to #doughsomething to fight racism.

Tickets are $10 and will support the Asian Americans Advancing Justice affiliation.

About the Speakers

Nyesha Arrington

Chef Nyesha Arrington was a fan favorite on Top Chef Season 8 and went on to win Knife Fight and Chef Hunter television competitions. She is also a past Zagat 30 under 30 honoree. Arrington has worked under Joël Robuchon at L'Atelier and The Mansion and she has opened lauded restaurant projects including past relics LEONA and Native.

Erik Bruner-Yang

Taiwanese-born, American-raised Erik Bruner-Yang is chef/owner of Maketto, ABC Pony, Yoko & Kota, and Shopkeepers based in Washington, D.C. He has earned numerous accolades, including Starchefs' Rising Star DC Restaurateur, Bon Appetit 50 Best New Restaurants, and is a multi-James Beard finalist. Last year, he founded the Power of 10 Initiative, a non-profit initiative that seeks donations to re-employ laid-off independent restaurant workers, keep eateries open, and provide meals to neighborhood workers on the front line of the pandemic.

Monica Eng

Monica Eng is WBEZ’s Curious City reporter. She also reports on food, health, cultural and environmental issues at the station. Monica came to WBEZ in 2013 from the Chicago Tribune where she spent 16 years editing and reporting on food, culture and health. Monica has won multiple writing awards and been nominated for the James Beard Award five times.

Brandon Jew

Brandon Jew is the chef and owner of Mister Jiu's, a Michelin-starred contemporary Chinese American restaurant in the heart of historic San Francisco Chinatown. He is also a co-owner of Moongate Lounge and Mamahuhu.

Beverly Kim

Beverly Kim is the co-owner and chef of Parachute, the Korean-American restaurant awarded a one-star rating from the Michelin Guide, and Wherewithall. Her cooking has been praised by the likes of Chicago Tribune, Eater, and Bon Appetit. Kim and husband Johnny Clark shared the 2019 James Beard Award for Best Chef: Great Lakes. In 2020, she founded The Abundance Setting, a non profit that supports the advancement of working mothers in the culinary and hospitality industry to have a sustainable career and a quality of life at home.

Preeti Mistry

Chef Preeti Mistry is the Co-Founder & Executive Chef of Navi Kitchen and Juhu Beach Club as well as the co-author of The Juhu Beach Club Cookbook. Preeti has held Executive Chef roles at the deYoung Musuem, the Legion of Honor in San Francisco and Google HQ in Mountain View, CA. They were a contestant on Top Chef Season Six and have been nominated twice by the James Beard Foundation as "Best Chef of the West."
