TRAINING OVERVIEW:

This fast-paced, case-based educational session will provide a highly practical review of psychopharmacology (depression, anxiety, psychosis, insomnia) including best practices in treatment, monitoring, and adjusting therapies. We will also discuss the perplexing world of interactions with psychopharmacology agents – drug/drug, drug/diet, and drug/disease interactions. Adverse effects will be reviewed, including how to advise patients on whether or not to contact their health care provider. Participants will leave with an understanding of these potent medications, and when and how to use them

Learning objectives: At the conclusion of this psychopharmacology training, the participant will be able to:

At the conclusion of this psychopharmacology seminar, the participant will be able to:
1. Describe best practices in assessing, diagnosing, and selecting medications to treat depression, anxiety, psychosis and insomnia.
2. Describe the most common drug/drug, drug/disease and drug/diet interactions with the most commonly used psychopharmacology agents.
3. Given a simulated patient of a patient with a mental health comorbid condition, demonstrate how to provide medication counseling, including the three most common adverse effects associated with therapy and action steps should they occur.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Mary Lynn McPherson, Pharm.D., MA, MDE, BCPS, CPE

Dr. McPherson is a Professor and Executive Director, Advanced Post-Graduate Education in Palliative Care in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy in Baltimore.
Dr. McPherson has a Master’s degree in Instructional Systems Development, and a Masters in Distance Education and e-Learning. Dr. McPherson has maintained a practice in both hospice (local and national) and ambulatory care her entire career. Dr. McPherson teaches extensively in the Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum on pain management and end of life care, including didactic and experiential content. She is the Program Director of the Online Master of Science and Graduate Certificates in Palliative Care at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. She also developed one of the first and few palliative care pharmacy residencies in the U.S. Dr. McPherson has won numerous awards for teaching, and her innovative practice in end of life care. She has published numerous articles, chapters, and four books including the second edition of the best-selling “Demystifying Opioid Conversion Calculations: A Guide for Effective Dosing.”

The Jewish Social Service Agency (JSSA) is authorized by the Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners to sponsor Category 1 continuing education programs. The D.C. and Virginia Boards of Social Work usually recognize the Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners’ approval. Please contact your state board for verification. JSSA maintains responsibility for this program.

JSSA is an approved sponsor of CE credits for psychologists in Maryland under the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. JSSA maintains responsibility for this program.

JSSA has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 6457. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. JSSA is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.

Cancellation Policy for CE Training Programs

Please note: refunds for JSSA’s 3-Hour CE training programs are provided 5 days prior to the training date. After that time, a credit can be issued if JSSA receives a registrant’s cancellation up to two business days prior to the training date. This credit can be applied towards a future 3-Hour CE training, symposium or post-graduate course up to one year from the issue date.
