Don't Fall! - A Class for Women by CAMP Rehoboth

FALL – it is a 4 letter word that evokes fear and anxiety, especially in older adults. We’ve all seen the commercial – a woman is lying on the floor and says “I’ve fallen and __ ____ ___ __ !” I am sure you were able to fill in the blanks – “I can’t get up.” The commercial is a bit goofy, but falls are no laughing matter.

Falls in older adults has reached epidemic proportions. The sad fact is that a serious fall can start a downhill spiral of health issues and loss of independence. The happy fact is that many falls are preventable!

This last spring, CAMP Rehoboth, in conjunction with the Wellness Doctoral Program at Arizona School of Health Sciences, conducted a survey of the health and wellness needs of lesbians, over age 60, living in our community. The survey showed that the women in our area are concerned about decreased muscle strength, decreased endurance for activities and increased fatigue. They indicated that the number one thing they wanted CAMP to offer was an exercise class. Not just any old exercise class. This class needed to be targeted to the abilities and goals of an older woman. The class needed to be a way to overcome the lack of motivation that so many feel about exercise. It also should be a way for individuals to meet up with people who have similar needs and goals and develop potential ‘exercise buddies’.

An exercise program focused on lower extremity strength and balance would be a solution to another concern raised in the survey – falls. There are several factors that can be addressed to decrease an individual’s risk of falls. I like to use the acronym DEBBIE to remember the factors. (I just so happens that my wife’s name is Debbie so it’s hard for me to forget!) -

Diet - Exercise - Balance - Buddy to exercise - Inspection of your home - Eye exam

To address these factors, CAMP has created an program called, “It’s Not Going to Happen to Me” Older Lesbian Exercise and Strengthening Group. The program will meet once per week, include a variety of exercises (strengthening, balance, TaiChi) and also include self-guided home assessments for fall or tripping hazards and instructions on how to get up after a fall.

Classes will meet at CAMP Rehoboth on October 3, 7, 17, 24 and 31, and November 7 from 10-11:30 a.m.
