Event description
Hartford Filmmaker RJ LaRussa's latest film and support from area bands, all curated by CTScramble (CT's indie music blog)

About this Event

RJ LaRussa is a Hartford filmmaker and University of Hartford alumni. LaRussa has worked on a wide variety of productions ranging from fiction and documentary to music videos and experimental film.

His work has one central goal: crafting visuals that first and foremost serve the story. The relationship between people and the world around them is integral to his work as a storyteller. On set he considers experimentation and improvisation after careful planning as central to the artistic process, bridging the real and surreal through the creation of an emotional dialectic.

His most recent directorial work, “Donnée”, explores the intersection of melodrama and documentary through Connecticut’s DIY music scene.

RJ LaRussa Presents his short film: "Donnée"

Donnée - noun. The subject or theme of a narrative.

How do you know yourself, let alone something you shared with another? Reality and fiction collide in this melodoc (see: melodrama, documentary) set against Connecticut's DIY music scene. Donnée uses surrealism and experimental techniques to weave the dreams, emotions, fears, and desires of two local artists into an interrogation of reality in relationships.

Filmed and edited over the course of two years, Donnée interacts with its subjects, and itself, to ask us to find a common truth.

Donnée stars Sephrina Alejandra Martinez-Hall and Paolo Celentano,

and was written by Alix Rettig and RJ LaRussa.

Musical Performances

Early Lover of Mankind: https://jrule.bandcamp.com/album/what-music

East Hartford musician and one-fourth of indie rock band Queen Moo, Jason Rule has been plugging away writing songs and performing solo shows under the moniker Early Lover of Mankind. Recently, Rule issued his recent collection of home recordings, entitled What Music?

What Music? is a lo-fi and loose-limbed collection of song sketches and tonal thoughts from the Hartford songwriter. In contrast to the artist’s often intricate, rhythmic, and multi-part song structures found in his main band, these songs come off as far more free-wheeling and spontaneous, more relaxed on capturing the ideas and emotions actively rather than in perfect form.

Greetings: https://greetingsgreetings.bandcamp.com/album/greetings-ep

Hartford based Greetings is the genre-blending indie project of musician Daniel Carr and friends. Greetings has released its debut EP on West Hartford’s Funnybone Records.

Primarily written, performed, recorded, mixed, mastered AND produced by Carr, the new EP as Greetings definitely comes off as a labor of love from the Hartford artist. Like the hazy and minimalistic orange color palette of its cover art, an airy blend of sun-soaked reverb and laid back vocals from Carr permeate the EP’s atmosphere.

There is a pleasant consistency between its seven tracks, almost coming off like one extended song that could easily be the soundtrack to the last days of the summer at the beach. While Greetings is Carr’s solo project, the EP also features significant contributions from fellow Hartford artists Chad Browne Springer, Blunt Corner, and and many others that help expand the music’s vocal dynamics and stylistically.
