Event Details

The Sojourner Group in Partnership with The Mayor's Office of Diversity Affairs Presents.

The Rape of Recey Taylor:

More and more women are now speaking up after rape. 'The Rape of Recy Taylor' tells the story of black women who spoke up when danger was greatest; it was their noble efforts to take back their bodies that led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott and movements that followed. The 2017 Global March by Women is linked to their courage. From sexual aggression on ‘40s southern streets to today’s college campuses and unsafe work environments, it is control of women’s bodies that powered the movement in Recy Taylor’s day and fuels our outrage today. The film is screening in communities and at organizations across the U.S. with a goal of elevating the voice of Black women and empower all survivors to share their stories - providing support and other initiatives for those who have endured sexual assault.

Official Trailer

Organizer

The Sojourner Group

The Sojourner Group provides culturally sensitive services focusing on the multi-faceted complexities specific to Black women who have survived sexual and domestic violence. We place close attention to the mental health associated with the silencing and isolation of Black women by offering a safe space for them to openly engage in honest conversations from a cultural and expressive lens. Our goal is to INSPIRE, INFORM, and EMPOWER survivors through education where participants can speak from a cultural frame of reference, be acknowledged, and validated in open discussion groups, workshops, and trainings.
