Event description
Building Hope for the Future: Domestic Violence: Recognize, Recourse & Recovery

About this Event

On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. During one year, this equates to more than 10 million women and men and domestic victimization is correlated with a higher rate of depression and suicidal behavior.*

Many victims of domestic violence may become paralyzed by fear, shame, or guilt and may not recognize that there IS hope for them. In this free program, we will have a panel of various professionals speaking about various means for victims to recognize the abuse, discover forms of recourse and find ways to recover.

The panel will consist of Attorney Jennifer S. Nolen (Sterk Family Law Group), Cathy O'Hara (Owner of O'Hara and Friends Salon) and Chris Alcorn Catena (education and outreach coordinator for the Crisis Center of South Suburbia).

Presenter bios:

Jennifer Nolen is an attorney whose primary area of practice is Family Law with Sterk Family Law Group. Jennifer has experience handling support matters, including maintenance and child support, child related issues, relocation matters, financial and real estate issues, and other family law matters. Jennifer is actively involved in leadership with various bar associations.

Cathy O'Hara has established a long and successful career in the hair and beauty industry, and despite all the things she’s learned over the decades, one lesson stands out: it’s not just what you do; it’s who you are. In order to maintain their edge on products and technical skills, her staff annually attends advanced-education courses, including the required course on Domestic Violence . O'Hara also conducts classes at her O'Hara and Friends salon on topics ranging from auto mechanics, to hair braiding, wedding hair and make-up and teaches anti bullying classes that promote “Be Kind. Be a Friend.” O'Hara has earned recognition for her skills in business, winning the Moraine Valley Community College Women in Business Award in 2015 and the Professional Irish Women in Business Award for Hair and Beauty in 2017. O’Hara & Friends has also won the Best of Chicago Southland Award 2014-2017. As a friend to the community, the salon has partnerships with organizations such as Little Company of Mary Breast Cancer Center, Almost Home services for the homeless, and Stuffed Love, which provides comfort and support to all and raises awareness about congenital heart defects.

Chris Alcorn Catena is an education and outreach coordinator for the Crisis Center of South Suburbia. She has worked in helping field for over 30 years dealing with the elderly, substance abuse addicts, DCFS wards and victims of rape and domestic violence. She has taught life skills to special needs populations for the State of Illinois and supervised visitation for families in DCFS care and has also served as the director of case management for Senior Services of Will County.
