Event description

Description

Every year 3-4 million women in the U.S. are abused and 1,500-1,600 are killed by their abusers. For 25 years, the Danger Assessment Instrument, developed and tested by Dr. Jacquelyn Campbell, has been used by law enforcement, healthcare professionals, and domestic violence advocates to identify those at highest risk of danger. In this session, Dr. Campbell will give participants from all parts of the system background on intimate partner homicide and how risk for DV re-assault differs from DV lethality risk. Participants will learn how to administer the Danger Assessment to determine risk of homicide in violent intimate relationships to victim/survivors, as well as how to communicate levels of danger to victims and survivors and other parts of the system. Suggestions for safety strategies based on the DA and levels of danger will also be discussed. Participants will also learn about a collaborative community risk assessment system that can be used to increase knowledge and communication of risk throughout the system and provide improved safety for victims.

Jacquelyn C. Campbell, PhD, RN, FAAN is Professor and Anna D. Wolf Chair at Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing. Dr. Campbell’s major area of research is violence against women and associated physical and mental health outcomes. Dr. Campbell has conducted more than 12 major research studies and has produced over 250 publications and seven books, including the 2017 version of Assessing Dangerousness and the 2011 Family Violence and Nursing Practice.
