Domestic Violence and Addiction

Course Description:

In this overview on Domestic Violence, the tools of the power and control, coping with trauma, and the processes for trauma informed care and healing will be discussed.


By the end of the training participants will:

  • gain a greater understanding of Domestic Violence and the social, cultural, and interpersonal dynamics that allow it to occur.

  • gain a greater understanding of how substance abuse intersects with domestic violence as both a tool of abusers and as a coping mechanism

  • learn tools to work with Domestic Violence survivors struggling with substance abuse in a trauma informed manner to promote healing and recovery

About the Presenter:

Heather Herrmann joined the Tennessee Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence as a Program Specialist in March of 2014, specializing in sexual assault prevention and trauma-informed shelter services. Before the Coalition, she spent three years with The Sexual Assault Center of East Tennessee where she served as Director of the organization’s satellite office, as well as acting as the organization’s social media coordinator. She has almost a decade of experience working with women and girls in Tennessee and South Carolina who have experienced violence and poverty.
