Description

Laura Pannack talks about her project The Cracker followed by a discussion with Bethany Kane and Inès Elsa Dalal about working with young people and the ethics of consent.

Laura Pannack is a London-based, award-winning photographer; known for her portraiture and social documentary artwork, she seeks to explore the complex relationship between subject and photographer. Laura's work has been extensively exhibited and published worldwide, including at The National Portrait Gallery, Somerset House, The Royal Festival Hall and the Houses of Parliament.

Through her Multistory project The Cracker, working with teenagers living in Tipton, Laura explored the friendships, character and traditions of the area. The resulting photographic portraits will be published in a magazine for the participants and presented at a special outdoor screening with food and music in collaboration with Sandwell Youth Service. See the events section for more details.

Bethany Kane's exhibition Lost IV is a collaboration with Sandwell College students using photography to explore their feelings towards society and politics, from the uncertainty of Brexit to the ever-increasing cost of living and the rise in university fees. This commission is part of the Forge Programme for the Blast! Festival.

Bethany Kane is an independent curator, photographer, Founder of Lost Generation Projects and Programme Co-ordinator of FORMAT International Photography Festival. Lost Generation Projects has exhibited over 50 international photographers and the exhibitions have been supported by University of Derby, Birmingham City University, Vice Magazine and Bene Culture. Beth has had solo exhibitions at Midlands Art Centre, Parkside Gallery Birmingham and Coventry Centre of Contemporary Arts.

Inès Elsa Dalal is a documentary photographer and educator concerned with the ethics of participatory practice. Her most recent portrait series Here To Stay launched in London, then toured to Birmingham’s Medicine Gallery and the University of Birmingham’s Medical School, and is now on permanent display at Sandwell Hospital in West Bromwich. She recently delivered a series of workshops in partnership with BEAM Sandwell exploring identity, self esteem, confidence, the validity of the right for refusal, the power of anonymity, self portraiture and self representation.
