Hidden in Silence: A Documentary based on Childhood Sexual Abuse in the Scottish Ethnic Minorities
About the Documentary
The issue of Childhood Sexual Abuse (CSA) in Scotland, particularly in the Scottish Ethnic Minorities (SEMs), has been raised in a documentary form for the first time.
The documentary follows the story of two adult female survivors of CSA from the Scottish Ethnic Minorities. They shared their story and journey of dealing with CSA in Scotland. Key service providers in Scotland have also been interviewed including representatives from Police Scotland, Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice, Convenor of the Scottish Parliament’s Cross Party Group on Adult Survivors of CSA (CPG-ASCSA), representatives from voluntary organisations working on CSA with SEM communities, psychotherapists, and community youth.
The documentary brings out the socio-cultural barriers to disclosure and reporting CSA; emotional and psychological trauma experienced by the survivors; challenges in accessing culturally sensitive trauma-services in Scotland; complexities associated with the legal proceedings; national level initiatives including the National Strategy for Survivors of Childhood Abuse in Scotland and the CPG-ASCSA; overall gaps in services and policies; and recommendations for the way forward. The documentary raises these challenges and concerns based on lived experiences of the survivors and service providers.
The timing of this documentary is critical for bringing about a policy change as October 2015 marked the tenth anniversary of the National Strategy for Survivors of Childhood Abuse in Scotland and the government is considering a refresh of the Strategy. The recommendations from the audience at the screening would be collated and shared with the CPG-ASCSA for consideration.
