About this event
This December, we're bringing together an inspirational pair of authors, makers and entrepreneurs– James Otter and Sophie Rochester – to help us rediscover the joy making, and learn why it's more vital than ever to get hands on.
Together, they will share their passion and expertise for crafting products, businesses and communities, and discuss the importance of these to the wider world.
James Otter, author of Do Make, created Otter Surfboards to combine his passion for the sea and love of working with local timber, specifically Cornish Cedar wood.
This more connected approach to business resonates with Sophie’s book Making a Living, and her company, Yodomo – the Hackney-based platform for sustainable making that helps local makers put circular economy no-waste principles at the heart of their work.
We will consider how traditional skills have changed from being a cornerstone of industry into a way for many of us to slow down and reconnect.
With the maker movement showing no signs of declining, we'll discuss the benefits and pitfalls of turning a love of making into a business, and ask these founders what they wish they'd known before starting out. And we may even get some ideas for hand-crafted Christmas gifts…
Join us at 7pm (GMT) on Wednesday 14th December for our last conversation of 2022!
The event will be held on Zoom, with tickets emailed to you just beforehand. This is as much a gathering of our members as a meet and greet with the authors, so feel free to contribute your own questions, or simply sit back and take it all in.
Can't join us on the night? The conversation will be recorded for Do Book Club members and available for 10 days after the event. They are always best enjoyed live though, so hope to see you there!
