Djembe Drum Workshop
Presented by Indigo Arts Alliance in collaboration with Embody The Rhythm, this workshop will dive deep into the art of Djembe drumming. Led by drumming Master Namory Keita, participants will have a chance to learn this specific percussive style with the traditional Doundoun family of drums.
Whether you are a beginner just starting down the path of drumming or a seasoned player ready to grow your skills, Namory’s infectious joy for playing and teaching will inspire. Participants are encouraged to bring their own djembe drum if they have one, or reserve a drum ($5). A limited number available so please reserve early. This workshop is open to all ages 16+.
PLEASE NOTE: For the health and safety expectations, all attendees at indoor events and performances are required to provide proof of up to date vaccines against the COVID-19 virus, or a negative PCR test from within the previous 48 hours or a negative ‘Rapid Test’ from the previous 12 hours. It is necessary to also show a legal photo identification along with your vaccination proof, or test result. All proof may be original or digital. Participants are asked to remain masked. There will be extra masks and hand sanitizer stations provided.

Orginally from Sangbarala, Guinea, Namory Keita has been a drummer for over 20 years. Namory grew up under the tutelage of his uncle, Famoudou Konate, one of the most famous West African drummers in the world.
As an international teacher and performing artist, Keitahas been invited to many places to share his culture including Germany, Poland, France, Canada, and Portugal. Since coming to America in 2010, he has played with Famoudou Konate, Mamady Keita, Bolokada Conde, Moussa Traore, Mamady Kourouma and the list goes on. He has also played for the world renowned West African dance teacher Youssouf Koumbassa, the Kouraba Festival in Canada, Cirque Zuma Zuma, ILAP, and many other noted musicians and venues throughout New England and the US and abroad.
Here in Portland, Keita is the co-director and lead drummer of New Moon Ensemble and performs regularly with the Akwaaba Ensemble. He teaches weekly drum classes, offers private lessons and accompanies dance classes at Embody the Rhythm and Seacoast West African Dance & Drum.
