DIY Online Tempeh Workshop: Ferment Your Own at Home!
Event Information
About this Event
Learn the entire fermentation process of handcrafting soybean tempeh in your own home! Tempeh can also be made with a variety of legumes and cereal grains. This is a live workshop that doesn't just show you HOW to make tempeh (the craft) but also the WHY (the science) behind the steps in tempeh production.
LEARN: I'll explain the science of transforming soybeans into tempeh and the process of fermentation unique to this traditional Indonesian soy product. You will know what to look out for in subsequent batches of tempeh and strategies for successful outcomes.
DEMO: I'll demonstrate the different stages of the tempeh preparation process from dehulling and splitting cooked soybeans to inoculating dried soybeans with tempeh starter. Observe as I package the inoculated soybeans in perforated ziplock bags for optimal sporulation and show you homemade soybean tempeh from 48 hours prior.
DO IT TOGETHER: Follow along at the inoculation stage if you already have soybeans (or other legumes/cereal grains- the principles of tempeh fermentation will still apply), a little vinegar, and tempeh starter! Whatever substrate used needs to have been soaked, cooked, drained, and laid out to dry prior to the workshop. Each participant will receive a full instructional handout describing these steps within 24 hours after registration.
You'll also be invited to join my private Facebook group specially for workshop guests and receive follow-up support for your tempeh made during or anytime after this workshop. As tempeh development can take up to a few days, I will continue to answer your questions and troubleshoot any concerns until your tempeh is ready!
This workshop is perfect for you if you:
- Have never made tempeh and feel apprehensive to start on your own
- Have attempted making tempeh but without satisfactory results
- Have burning questions about tempeh and want a go-to person to ask!
Session notes/slides and a Zoom recording of our online workshop will be emailed to all registered participants within two hours after our session. Zoom login details will be emailed to individual participants the day before our workshop.
