DIY Kinetic Sculpture: Tabletop Flying Machine FEB
Saturday, February 15, 2014 at 1:00 PM - Sunday, February 16, 2014 at 5:00 PM (EST)
Motion is mesmerizing, especially when it's art. Make an interactive kinetic sculptural toy, powered by the hand, simulating flight to enchant kids, entertain visitors, and disarm the boss when he makes the rounds. It's a simple machine whose parts you'll understand inside and out, make from scratch, and walk away with at the end of the class. You'll be learning small metal working skills like brazing and forming to accomplish your beautiful beast.
Students will come out of this weekend workshop with a familiarity with basics of brazing torch usage and safety, a grasp of rotary motion and basic mechanics, and a kinetic machine sculpture to take home!
No previous experience required. Students must be at least 18 years old.
All the brass and metal used to make the parts will be provided, as well as pliers, torches, gas, braze, glue etc. Materials cost is included in the class registration fee.
What to Bring:
Students should wear fire-safe clothing: non-synthetic materials and work gloves. Students should bring a sketchpad and writing utensil for notes and ideas, and a permanent marker.
