As designers and artists we are concerned with space and as humans we are concerned with justice. We call into question our roles within the current social dynamics in the urban context that have led to the massive demonstrations of protest against police brutailty that have resulted in legacies of racisim, Jim Crow, and damaging consquenences of exclusionary urban design practices.
We have the power and responsibility to actively and critically confront social injustice, both in Philadelphia and globally, as the design community at the University of Pennsylvania.
We provoke designers and artists to be catalysts of change and intend to carry this conversation into the design community at large continuing a dialouge begun at Columbia's GSAPP, and bringing the conversation to an intended conference in the fall.
We believe that a discussion between designers, artists, scholars, and practictioners in other fields will be productive and enbale us to formulate plans for positive action.
When & Where
PennDesign is an inventive place of learning where the many fields of architecture, planning, preservation, landscape and the fine arts come together on shared ground. At PennDesign, we are dedicated to design that is creative in nature and transformative in impact. In a collaborative environment that fosters inquiry and experimentation, faculty and students seek to recast the distinction between theory and practice, expand knowledge and invention through research, and contribute works of value and beauty.
