DISTRICT FLAVOR: LOCAL FOOD BLOCK PARTY
as part of 350.org's Global Work Party
We believe in the power of local food to uplift our communities, improve our health and revitalize our local economy.
Roadside Organics, Green the Block and Bread for the City will join forces to bring local food to underserved District residents. While organic fervor has struck in DC, it has not yet reverberated across the city. We want to bring the new food movement to those residents living in the District’s notorious food ‘deserts’, showing how bringing back age-old Sunday supper can anchor families in new healthy lifestyles.
The ‘Green the Block’ campaign is bringing the clean energy debate to low-income communities that often pay the highest price for the environmental and public health consequences of climate change. The new green economy offers real opportunities to reinvent sustainable lifestyles and revitalize marginalized neighborhoods. This event will introduce the time-tested notion that “you are what you eat”. As a cultural stronghold, food can create an accessible platform to challenge existing choices and move in a new ‘green’ direction.
Roadside Organics is working to recast the face of the local food movement, creating an accessible tone for ‘next’ generation organic. Here in the Nations Capital a perennial problem for most city residents is lack of access to high quality ingredients. Farmers markets, community gardens and community supported agriculture play a vital role in redefining how citizens engage with food, delivering on the often abstract farm-to-table ideal. By challenging the reigning distribution model, this new paradigm has the potential to serve the city's notorious food deserts.
The LOCAL FOOD BLOCK PARTY will feature local food and music from some of DC's best chefs and musicians. Please come savor the local flavors!
