District Energy Vanguards Network

Heat Networks: The Road to Commercialisation

Tuesday 21 May 2019 - Manchester

Choosing a commercial structure for your heat network can feel daunting. How do you evaluate the different commercial structures to make sure you get the best fit for your organisation and your network? How do you strike a balance between risk, complexity and the cost of capital?

The UK District Energy Vanguards Network is hosting a free one-day workshop in Manchester on Tuesday 21 May 2019 that will help local authorities to consider these questions and other aspects of choosing commercial structures for heat network projects. Whether you’re completing a feasibility study or working through the business case for your network, this session can help you to consider the options that are available and the financing and procurement opportunities associated with them.

The day will comprise:

  • 9.30am - Arrivals and refreshments

  • 10.00am - The Road to Commercialisation: workshop begins. We'll be working through a process exploring objectives and constraints, different business models and structures, a methodology for comparing different approaches, and the finance and procurement options that you might consider. It promises to be a full and rich day!

  • 4.30pm - Workshop concludes

  • 5.00pm - Stay with us for drinks!

The day promises to be interactive and engaging, with discussions, debate and the opportunity to network with local authority peers and learn from your collective experience. The event has been made possible by our lead sponsor SSE and our further sponsors Powerpipe, SWEP and Switch2.

You can register your place using the green Register button towards the top right of this screen.

The event is free to attend for local authorities and other public sector organisations. If you are representing a commercial organisation and wish to attend, you will need to provide written authorisation that you are attending on behalf of a public sector organisation.

If you would like any further details, please contact Liz Warren, SE2 Ltd, on 020 8469 1333 or email liz.warren@se-2.co.uk.

This workshop is a repeat of one run in London in February 2019. The following quotes were provided by attendees at that session:

Fantastic day to help set out the framework of options available for local authority workers considering or tasked with investigating heat networks in their area. Useful whether you have some knowledge already, or you’re just setting out to investigate a heat network and it’s all new. A really friendly, collaborative workshop focused on interaction rather than dictation. (Local authority)

This is a great opportunity to share the experiences and common lessons learnt from District Heating project teams who are willing to impart knowledge and requirements within a relaxed and informal setting. I thought the workshop was very beneficial as there were people from all parts of the DHN value chain in attendance and this meant that answers to various questions could be addressed by people directly involved with every aspect of developing and delivering a DHN. (Funder)

I came away motivated and much better informed of the application of different commercial models to heat networks according to the stakeholders and their appetite for risk. This is now actively helping me develop a community energy project. The event was practical and useful. I definitely recommend attending if you are planning to develop a heat network.
