Event description

Description

Presented by Six Square, Austin’s Black Cultural District, the District Cultural Arts Fest is a celebration that honors the rich legacy and cultural contributions of Central Texas’ Black community.

A yearly festival in East Austin, our goals are to explore and highlight the multi-faceted talents of Black creatives and reclaim space for community in Austin’s historically Black neighborhoods.

During the day (3-7pm), we’ll have a craft and food vendor market featuring local Black-owned businesses as well as four activations that showcase a variety of Black cultural expressions:

Libations
Libations will explore the origin of staple dishes in Black food and drink. We’ll be serving small plates inspired by icons in Black food culture alongside curated selections from Wines of Dotson-Cervantes.

Storytelling and Media
Black activists and artists of history have empowered innovative Black storytellers of today to tell their own unapologetic and authentic story and forward culture. During the activation we will display work from both historical Black activists and modern day Austin artists.

From 6pm to 7pm we will host a Speaker Series with Austin-based creatives of color. They will share some of their short-form content and speak about using media as a tool for displaying positive representation and building strong narratives; how they monetize as content creators within the digital space; and answer questions from audience members.

Public Art
In collaboration with Raasin McIntosh, founder of Raasin in the Sun, our art activation will explore the progression of Black art, from traditional media like paint to digital art.

The activation includes live painting by two Austin-based Black mural artists, a community mural, and a digital art installation.

In the evening we’ll kick off our music festival featuring a wide spectrum of Black performers spanning from soul, blues, jazz, rock, and hip-hop. Kicking off the fest are CJ Edwards and the Funk Fellowship, Temple Underground, and Mobley. Headlining is Grammy-nominated Maimouna Youssef (aka Mumu Fresh).

On August 31, 2019, join us as we continue creating a nexus of thriving Black arts and culture in East Austin.

This is a family-friendly event. All are welcomed!
