Learning Lab - January 2021
Please join us on Sunday, January 10, 2021 between 10am and 1pm for our monthly Toastmasters District 100 Learning Lab. We have one hour sessions in three experiences to help you and your club thrive as you continue to work towards your personal and your club's goals. This month's Learning Lab includes a new Contest Training experience in advance of the upcoming club, area, and division contests!
Choose from the following experiences (you're welcome to mix and match classes from different experiences):
• Toastmaster 360: 10am - 11am
•Introduction and Expanding your Pathway Journey: 11am - 12pm
• Pathways and Beyond: The Art of Listening (Part 1): 12pm – 1pm
• Building a Super and Fun Club Reunion: 10am - 11am
• Club Officer Make Up Training: 11am – 12pm
• Using the 3 A’s effectively – Acknowledge, Appreciate, and Ask for Input: 12pm - 1pm
• Developing Leaders – Developing 12 week Goals: 10am - 11am
• Journey to DTM (Distinguished Toastmaster): 11am – 12pm
• How to be a Super Club Sponsor, Mentor or Coach: 12pm - 1pm
• Contest Chair Training: 10am – 11:30am
• Chief Judge and Voting Judges Training: 11:35am - 1pm

Learning Lab Opportunities January 10, 2021
10:00 – 11:00 sessions
*Member Experience – Toastmaster 360
What do you know about the organization you have joined? There is much beyond the club for you to learn. This session is designed to provide assistance to members who want to experience a broader stroke of the Toastmasters organization, its purpose and mission at multiple levels, and how to navigate it to make the most of the journey.
Objectives:
• To be come familiar with Toastmasters Core Values/Toastmaster Promise
• To understand the club and its purpose, and how it fits with the district’s mission
• To learn Toastmasters International hierarchy and the organizational structure
• How Toastmasters creates value from the Distinguished Club Program
*Club Experience – Building a Super and Fun Club Reunion
Ever been to a reunion?…maybe college reunion?…what fun it is to find out what people have been doing since you’ve last seen them. The program for these 12 weeks is for clubs to hold reunion meetings to re-engage past members. This session is designed to help you develop the plan and hold an exciting reunion for your club.
Objectives:
• Learn how to personalize invitations to past members
• Learn what to include in a reunion meeting agenda
• Present creative ideas and hold a fun reunion
• Learn how to identify and make contact with former members
*Leadership Experience – Developing Leaders – Developing 12 week Goals
District 100 uses the 12 week system for our calendar year. It is different from using the quarter system or full year calendar. This session is designed to help leaders learn how to develop, use, and be accountable for 12 goals to support and coordinate with the overall district philosophy. You will get more done in 12 weeks!
Objectives:
• Learn the basic concepts of the 12 week system
• Learn how to develop 12 week goals
• Learn how to monitor and be accountable for goal completion
11:00 – 12:00 Sessions
*Member Experience – Introduction and Expanding your Pathway Journey
Welcome to Toastmasters International learning experience called Pathways! This is an exciting, flexible, and interactive way to develop your leadership and communication skills. Having a problem? Need some assistance? Want to know what this program is all about. This session is designed for YOU! Come and learn!
Objectives:
• Determine what members need who are participating
• Provide assistance with current members who are stuck
• Provide information and resources for members
*Club Experience – Club Officer Make Up Training
If you missed the main club officer training or want more training, this session is designed for you. Research shows that if you are well-trained in your officer position, your club is healthier and stronger. Anyone holding an officer position and taking this session will receive credit for being trained. If you are interested in one day being a club officer and you want to increase your knowledge, this session is for you as well.
Objectives:
• Learn the role and responsibilities for the club officer position
• Discuss the methods for implementing the club position
• Learn the resources available for the club position
*Leadership Experience – Journey to DTM
The journey to Distinguished Toastmaster (highest award) is an exciting and rewarding experience. If you are interested in taking this wonderful journey, this session is for you! It will help you plan, move through the steps, and enjoy receiving the highest award in the organization. Some people choose to take this journey more than once…you can receive as many DTM’s as you want to earn. Here is an opportunity to be guided and mentored through the process with an experienced DTM.
Objectives:
• Assessment of what is needed by Individual interested members
• Assignments to positions or tasks necessary to complete requirements
• Can begin the journey at any time
• Guidance and mentoring will be provided as necessary for committed members
12:00 – l:00 Sessions
*Member Experience – Pathways and Beyond: The Art of Listening, Part 1
Have you experienced someone who is NOT listening as you speak? Have you NOT listened as someone else is speaking. So many skills are included in learning to listen well. This first session will introduce those basic skills necessary for active listening, with part two developing “deep” listening. We can all learn to listen. Research indicates that unless we have training, we are poor listeners. Toastmasters helps in developing that skill with the various roles we have: ah counter, grammarian, evaluator, etc. These sessions will take the participant to a deeper level.
Objectives: Part 1 – Jan 10, 2021
• Learn the importance of effective listening skills
• Learn the importance of active listening
• Learn how to ignore distractions
• Learn how to listen with empathy
Objectives: Part 2 - February 7, 2021
• Learning the importance and difference between connotation and denotation
• Learning to determine between fact and opinion
• Learning to inspire openness in listening
• Listening to body language
*Club Experience – Using the 3 A’s effectively – Acknowledge, Appreciate, and Ask for Input
Every human being needs acknowledgement, appreciation and, asked for their opinion. But how do you do that? This session is designed to help members know how to create each, what to say, and develop the habit of using them in your club. These communication skills will help the club to retain members. If this something you’d like to increase, visit this session!
Objectives
• Learn how to acknowledge, appreciate, and ask for input for every person in your club
• Learn what words you say when applying these skills
• Learn when to apply these skills
*Leadership Experience – How to be a Super Club Sponsor, Mentor, or Coach
You want to try your hand in leading? You need to serve in one of the roles for credit towards a DTM award? You want to experience helping others? You want to give back what you have gained? This session is designed for these purposes. We need super club sponsors, mentors, and coaches for our clubs. It is a good time to throw your hat in the ring and try. This is a fun way of developing leadership skills.
Objectives:
• Learn the roles and responsibilities of a sponsor a mentor, and a coach
• Determine what opportunities that are available for each category
• Possibly be assigned to a club with the appropriate designation
• If filled a position, receive credit for serving
NEW: Contest Training Experience
*10:00 – 11:30 Contest Chair Training
This training is designed for those individuals who are looking for leadership experience. This individual will be responsible for chairing the overall area or division, or district contest and is an administrative position. This person will work closely with their team of functionaries and the Program Quality Director to create a positive and supportive contest.
Objectives:
• To learn the role of Contest Chair
• To follow the step by step planning worksheet
• To develop a team of functionaries
• To hold the role of Chair/Toastmaster for the area or division, or district contest
• To work with the Program Quality Director for assistance/coaching
*11:35 – 1:00 – Chief Judge and Voting Judges training
If you are interested in participating in the contest as a Chief Judge or Voting Judge, this session is for you. Come and learn how to pick a winner and/or how to lead a team of judges as a Chief Judge. These roles are fun and you will learn so much in a contest venue.
Objectives:
• Learn the roles of Chief Judge and voting judges
• Learn the steps to following what the two types of judges do in contests
• Be available for judging in area, division, or district contests
• Work with the District’s Chief Judge for assistance/coaching
