Event description

Description

In their new book Biscayne National Park, Kirsten Hines and Dr. James A. Kushlan capture the story of southern Biscayne Bay and the national park that protects it. Southern Biscayne is a remarkable place, a tropical lagoon, the northernmost Florida Keys, mangrove-lined shores, West Indian forests, and the northern extent of the Florida reef tract. The book tells the story of this landscape from the times of native Americans, through its discovery by Juan Ponce de Leon, and three centuries of colonial rule. This is also is the story of pioneer Conch and American settlers and their successors, who lived on the land and fished the waters. And it is the story of local conservationists who successfully forestalled further development. It is especially the story of Biscayne National Park, this year celebrating its golden 50th anniversary of protecting this precious seascape. In this presentation, the authors will share these stories, historical images, and Hines’ photography of the Park as it is today.
