The MMU Centre for Advanced Computational Science Distinguished Lecture Series

Dr Lucy Rogers CEng FIMechE, Founder, Guild of Makers Ltd

"Play, Imagine and Make the Future"

If you ask someone 'what do you make?', the reply will tend to be about money and bonuses, quick-fix solutions and virtual experiences. Cottage industries almost died with the industrial revolution. However, they are now returning as the Maker industry. Hobbyists are turning professional. From knitting to electronics, wood carving to welding, Makers are turning their creative hobbies into their professions. In Britain we tend to underestimate the power of small, creative businesses. These businesses not only support jobs but also teach highly useful skills. In 2014, the Crafts Council calculated the value of craft skills to the UK economy at £3.4 billion. Micro-businesses, employing up to nine people, account for 33% of employment and 22% of turnover. We need to celebrate the making of things, with care, with love and with a deep understanding of materials Knowledge is free. Imagination is a skill. Power is in the hands of the individual. Failure is fine. Learning is easier when it’s fun. The community will help. Let’s make the future.

Speaker bio:

I am a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, problem solver, maker and Judge on the recent series of BBC Robot Wars. I am a cheerleader for the Maker Industry and Founded the Guild of Makers (www.guildofmakers.org). I also have a PhD in Bubbles (Fluid Dynamics), a City in Guilds in Woodturning and a Cycling Proficiency Certificate. My family make things – from spinning to woodwork, metalwork to embroidery. Making is such a integral part of my life that it was only recently that I realised I am a “maker” first and an “engineer” second. To me it’s like saying I’m 5’6″ or I have blue eyes. It’s just part of what I am. But I’ve realised not everyone is encouraged to make or even know what a maker is. I aim to change that.
