About the workshop

The Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development is pleased to host a cross-agency workshop on Disruptive Technologies. The workshop will be facilitated by the Australian Futures Project and feature panelists representing organisations including:

  • The Productivity Commission
  • The Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA)
  • Microsoft
  • Telstra
  • Enabled Employment
  • Data 61- CSIRO
  • The Australian Digital Currency and Commerce Association
  • Department of Defence

The workshop will provide a unique and thought-provoking look into disruptive technologies and their implications for government. It will offer participants chance to sharpen their policy-making claws, consider approaches to best address the challenges and opportunities disruptive technologies present for Government.

Importantly, the workshop will be an opportunity to collaborate with peers from across the APS, and consider the views of Government, industry, research, and the community.

Objectives

  • Discover: What are technologies and their impacts? What are the strategic policy issues?
  • Understand: Who is involved? What are the cross-portfolio threads? Where are we now? What are the likely scenarios?
  • Engage: Where are the opportunities for collaboration? Where are there alignments in objectives? Where are the blockers?
  • Explore: How might policy makers break down complex challenges posed by disruptive technologies? Where might we seek to shift policy process fundamentals?
  • Prototype: Can we prototype policy options for further testing (with the community)?
  • Respond: Augment the Productivity Commission's research, providing a novel, cross-portfolio response, whether practical options, broad priorities, or policy seeds for further consideration.
