Description

Dispatches Deep Dive: How not to be a journalistic “leg motherfucker”, Jan 23rd 2-5pm

Wayne Svoboda, Room 430

Read a book like you’ve never read a book before. Dispatches is ostensibly a book-length collection of Vietnam war reports written by Michael Herr for Esquire magazine in 1968. What it really is, however, is Journalism School in hardcover. Every single lesson aspiring journalists need to know is contained inside this book. In this workshop we will suss out those lessons and apply them to what the best journalists do every working day. Put simply, we’ll learn to read deeply.

Chapters and excerpts with hardcore news teachings include: “Hell Sucks,” “Colleagues,” “Breathing In,” “Breathing Out,” “Snow in the Tropics” and more.

Herr wrote in a voice like no other. If you want to read words that string together and explode in your face (and who doesn’t), this is the book for you. Rucked up participants will read it prior to class.
