Event description

Description

With the upcoming 2020 election and census, the Newmark J-School is hosting a day-long training by our partner, First Draft, to prepare journalism students in identifying, verifying, and responsible reporting of disinformation that they may encounter covering these national events.

Students will spend the morning working on a simulated crisis to learn how to cover a breaking news event that includes online disinformation, i.e. fake websites, social media posts and manipulated videos. In the afternoon, they'll have two master classes -- one in identifying disinformation and a second in verification of online content. The day will close with a group discussion on the ethical challenges that covering online communities and closed anonymous spaces bring to modern reporting.

This training, which is typically not offered in j-school curricula, is free. We'll provide pizza. The address is 230 West 41st Street!
