Event description

Description

FEMA Region IX* will be holding a RiskMAP Discovery meeting in Salinas to learn about the priority risks and hazards your community faces. Our aim is to better align FEMA resources to support your risk reduction and resilience goals.

What can you gain by participating in the Discovery process?
The Discovery meeting is the starting point for a multi-year partnership between FEMA and your community. By participating in this effort, you will have the opportunity to inform us on your risk reduction priorities and get resources needed to enhance ongoing efforts. For example: updated flood maps, grants trainings, risk assessment tools, and resources or support for hazard mitigation planning.

In short, you will walk away with: access to resources and new partnerships to help implement risk reduction and resilience actions. A detailed agenda will be shared in advance of the Discovery meeting.

In preparation for our discussion, the FEMA Region IX Discovery team has:

  1. Conducted one-on-one interviews with local planners, floodplain managers, public works, and emergency response officials (including some of you).
  2. Reviewed your Hazard Mitigation Plans, including top hazards and mitigation actions your communities have planned to pursue.
  3. Reviewed repetitive loss data, levee certification status, and requests for flood mapping.
  4. Researched local socio-economic, land use, and environmental features.

What are we looking for from you?

Though we have worked hard to be able to step into a conversation without too much introduction, most of what we learn will come from you during the Discovery meeting.

  • Share information! What are the hazards, risks and vulnerabilities that keep you up at night? What are your community’s top priorities? What are the areas of new or priority development in your community? Are there hazard mitigation and resilience success stories you can share?
  • Send material! If you have any plans, GIS layers, or other documents you think we should have in advance of this meeting, please reach out and share them with us.
  • Send names of key stakeholders! Please make sure that we have invited any fire response, evacuation planning, floodplain management, emergency management, public works, urban planning, and other stakeholders you think should participate in this discussion. Email Maryam Hariri at Maryam.Hariri@ogilvy.com or Ivellisse Morales at ivellisse.morales@ogilvy.com with suggested invitee names.
  • Send in your RSVP!

We look forward to partnering with you and receiving your on-the-ground expertise. Your knowledge of your community’s history, needs, and priorities is critical to this effort.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Community Engagement Lead Maryam Hariri at maryam.hariri@ogilvy.com or Ivellisse Morales at ivellisse.morales@ogilvy.com.
