Event description

Description

In honor of Black History Month, we are excited to welcome Dr. Alex Gee for dinner and discussion. Gee, a pastor and professor, will draw on material from a forthcoming series of episodes from his Black Like Me podcast, in which he shares the story of his personal genealogy research. His research led him to discover white blood relatives, who are descendants of his family’s slaveholders. He will explore the complex history of his own background, weaving in his personal experiences as a lifelong Madisonian, scholar and community leader. Together, we will consider how Gee’s own past is juxtaposed with the greater history of black and white America in relation to race.

Dr. Gee is the senior pastor of Fountain of Life Covenant Church, a multiracial, multigenerational and multi-class congregation in Madison, and is the leader of the Nehemiah Center for Urban Leadership, a non-profit organization that focuses on developing and mobilizing emerging African American leaders. Dr. Gee’s professional arsenal also includes a Doctorate in Transformational Leadership (Bakke Graduate University), two published books, extensive research on the dynamics of human relations (particularly the impact of fatherlessness in Black males), identity, purpose and strategic partnerships. For the past few years he has served as an adjunct professor in Edgewood College’s Doctoral Studies Program in Madison and North Park Theological Seminary in Chicago, IL. The genealogy research he will discuss and his subsequent introduction to white relatives in the southern United States was recently featured on “To the Best of Our Knowledge” (Wisconsin Public Radio).

Event price is $50 per person and includes dinner.
